Kenny Dalglish fielded a very strong side against the Manchester outfit, with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Craig Bellamy starting the game, along with the return of Martin Kelly to the Starting XI, with Glen Johnson shifted out left to allow Jose Enrique a half game off (brought on later on) after a busy season for the Spaniard thus far.

Joe Hart was called into action on a number of occasions in the first 10 minutes, with the Reds starting out with an attacking stance. But Joe Hart made superb stops to deny Liverpool the lead. The deserved goal finally came on the 12th minute mark, with Daniel Agger showing superb reading of the game before he was fouled by Manchester City defender Savic in the penalty box.

The captain duly took the chance as he calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom left hand corner, with the finish offering Joe Hart no chance for the save. Carroll dominated Manchester City’s defence, and most notably took advantage of Savic’s inexperience, with the Englishman managing to outmuscle the young defender on a number of occasions.

But Liverpool will not be boosted by news that Jay Spearing might see some time on the sidelines now, after suffering an injury mid-game against the City side. The Reds are already missing Brazilian central defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva to long term injury, so this might force Kenny Dalglish to go into the transfer market and get some reinforcements in the defensive midfield department.

Liverpool went on the defensive after the break, even resorting to 5 at the back for a large spell, with Jose Enrique brought on in place of Stewart Downing to help defend the one goal lead. The Merseyside outfit will now hope to take this result back to Anfield and finish the fixture off.
