As reported by DNA India, the incident took place in a village in the Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the outlet, the young man’s girlfriend was to be married to another man and was in the middle of her wedding preparations when he entered her home in his disguise. The young man was dressed as an Indian bride, complete with fake hair, makeup and a woman’s purse to complement the outfit.
Though the man successfully snuck into his lover’s home, India.com reports that his body language created suspicion among the woman’s family. When the family removed his dupatta—the shawl covering his head—his fake hair came off, and the family members were shocked to discover that he was, in fact, a young man.
The video shows the family members confronting him before eventually forcing the young man to leave the home. He was not able to see his lover before being kicked out.
Several accounts tweeted out the video.
“India is a country of lovers,” said one Twitter user. “A guy dressed up like a bride to meet his lover who was getting married.”
One Twitter user found humor in the video.
“I can’t get over how he also cannot get hold of the purse,” the commenter said, before joking that purses are a “pain in the a**” for everyone.
After the man was caught, a group of locals set out to tell the police; however, the man and his friends—who had been waiting outside on their bikes—escaped before the police were informed, reports DNA India. Per the outlet, a report has yet to be filed, and it still remains unclear as to why the young man chose to dress as a young bride to crash his lover’s wedding festivities.
Other Indian weddings have recently had bizarre interruptions. Last week, one woman died of a heart attack on the altar, leading her groom to marry her sister instead. And earlier last month, one Indian woman married a wedding guest after she discovered her groom had run away right before the main ceremony was set to begin.
