Tilden was a very, very dedicated guy. He was a tennis nut. He had nothing else in his life but tennis, nothing. Bill wrote a lot of books on tennis, you know. For their day, they were damned good. But he was a lousy teacher. Because he would insist on teaching people to hit the ball the way he hit the ball.

Bill would take nothing from anybody. If he thought a line call was out, he’d raise hell with the linesman. In fact, he was like that with everybody, even when he played bridge. If his partner goofed, or anybody else goofed, Bill would bawl them out. He wasn’t really argumentative, because he didn’t brook any argument. If Bill had a point, and you had a point, Bill would simply dismiss yours. I wouldn’t say he was arrogant. He was just always right.
